Popularly known as Ram Dass, Richard Alpert was an American spiritual leader, author, psychologist, and teacher. His journey of becoming ‘Ram Dass’ from Richard Alpert is quite interesting. In the 1960s, during his travel to India, his search for spirituality led him to Hindu guru ‘Neem Karoli Baba’. He served as his disciple and transformed into a Hindu guru. Neem Karoli Baba renamed him ‘Ram Dass’, which means ‘Servant of Ram’.
He is also known for his association with Dr Timothy Leary at Harvard University. They both researched & studied the effects of psychedelics in the 1970s. He also started many charitable organizations like Seva Foundation and Hanuman Foundation.
He used to travel all-round the globe, preaching to people and raising funds for charity. He wrote ‘Be Here Now’ based on spiritual teachings and yoga. Through this book, he wanted to spread the idea of spirituality in the west. This book is a best-seller worldwide, with more than two million copies sold.
