Mother Teresa also known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta was a Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to serve the poor around the world. She is also called as a โ€œblessedโ€ missionary beloved by millions. She founded the Missionaries of Charity. She spent many years in Calcutta, India where famine and violence had devastated the poor and devoted to helping those in great need. Her charity work expanded globally and in 1979 Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prizeย โ€œfor work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitutes a threat to peaceโ€. She thenย  became a symbol of charitable, selfless work.

Some Interesting Facts About Mother Teresa!

Mother Teresaโ€™s name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, given by her parents. Her family was financially sound till her fatherโ€™s death when she was 8. She was fascinated with missionaries from the very beginning, and she committed herself to religious vocation at 12. Young Agnes left home when she was 18 and joined the Sisters of Loreto in Rathfarnham, Ireland. She never for once saw her mother or sister again.

While taking the vow as a nun to honor Saints Therese of Lisieux and Teresa of Avila, she chose the name, Teresa. She started teaching history and geography in Calcutta at St. Maryโ€™s, a high school for the daughters of the wealthy. However, she enjoyed working there but was unhappy and distressed to see the poverty all around her. It took her almost two years of preparation to start the actual work in helping the poor and the needy. It was not easy for her as she used to live a very comfortable life, but this path which she chose was full of discomfort and hardships.

Mother Teresa was honored with many prestigious awards throughout her life, beginning with the Indian Padma Shri in 1962, the inaugural Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, Albaniaโ€™s Golden Honour of the Nation in 1994 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She requested a $192,000 budget be given to help the poor of India and refused the traditional Nobel honor banquet.
