Sir Charles Kuen Kao was a Hong Kong physicist and electrical engineer. Kao was born in Shanghai, China, and was a permanent resident of Hong Kong with British and American citizenships. His global travels caused him to believe that he belonged to the world rather than any particular country. Below is a collection of Charles K Kao quotes for you to enjoy.

Kao grew up in Taiwan and Hong Kong before studying electrical engineering in London. Kao worked at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories in Harlow in the 1960s, the research center of Standard Telephones and Cables (STC). At STC, he built the foundation for fiber optics in communication in 1966.

He was a forerunner in the invention and application of fiber optics in telecommunications. Kao pioneered the use of glass fibers and lasers to carry digital data in the 1960s, laying the foundation for the Internet’s expansion.

In 2009, he was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his “groundbreaking findings in light transmission and optical communications through fiber.” A lot of people refer to him as “The Godfather of Broadband,” “The Father of Fiber Optics,” or even “The Father of Fiber Optics Communications.”

He was also a key figure in the early stages of optical communication engineering and commercialization. Kao toured numerous glass and polymer facilities and spoke with various experts, including engineers, scientists, and people in business, regarding glass fiber manufacturing procedures and improvements.

From 1987 to 1996, Kao served as Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. For two years, Kao served as chairman and a Hong Kong’s Energy Advisory Committee (EAC) member, retiring on July 15, 2000. “The introduction of optical fiber systems will revolutionize the communications network. The low transmission loss and the large bandwidth capability of the fiber systems allow signals to be transmitted for establishing communications contacts over large distances with few or no provisions of intermediate amplification.”

“Maybe it was the home tutoring, or the late start to formal schooling, or an overly cautious and protective upbringing, but in any case, I never became a talkative person. As an adult, I am not always comfortable in social gatherings with small talk. I must have inherited my father’s gentle nature.”
