Facts About Ernest Hemingway!
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21st, 1899, and named after his maternal grandfather, Ernest Hall.
His father taught him to fish and hunt, while his mother, a musician, wanted him to learn music. This often created conflicts between his parents, but as it turned out later, music inspired part of his writing while fishing became his lifetime hobby.
Hemingway served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. During the war in 1918, he was badly injured by mortar fire. But, despite the pain, he drove an Italian soldier to safety, earning himself an Italian silver medal of valor and a bronze star in the process. Hemingway was well known for being anti-war; however, he was severally accused of war crimes but later cleared of all allegations.
The father of three survived two plane crashes barely 24 hours apart. While on vacation in Belgian Congo with his fourth wife, their charter flight clipped a pole and crashed. The following day, the couple boarded another plane to a medical center in Entebbe, Uganda, which also crashed during take-off.
The legendary author suffered burns, a concussion, and leaking brain fluid.
The couple, however, got to Entebbe via a truck, only to discover news reports announcing their deaths. Shockingly, Hemingway even read his own obituary!
