Lewis Burwell ‘Chesty’ Puller was destined for military success almost from the day he was born. He was born on June 26, 1898. His name is used in numerous social and military exercises by the United States Marine Corps. When they encouraged each other to complete a set of push-ups, they would exclaim, “Do one for Chesty!”. “Chesty Puller never quit!” is another popular phrase to lift their spirits. They would even sing about his bravery and honour in the early mornings – “Chesty Puller was a good Marine, and a fine Marine was he”.
Puller’s zeal and heroism were on display during the Korean War. After the conflict, he accepted a job in North Carolina until 1955, when he retired due to a stroke. And he died of a stroke on October 11, 1971, in Virginia, United States. Puller has gone by numerous aliases and nicknames, but Chesty is the one that has stuck with him.
