Synopsis
Alexander the great (Formally known as Alexander the 3rd of Macedon) born in the year 356 BC was a ruler of the ancient kingdom of Macedon. Having been tutored by none other than Aristotle, until he was 16, at the young age of 20 he succeeded his father to the throne following his assassination.
He is best known for overthrowing the Persian empire, re-establishing the Corinthian League, and uniting Greece.

Alexander the great had a wise teacher by the name of Aristotle who believed our primary purpose in life is to find happiness (εὐδαιμονία / eu̯dai̯monía) which translates into prosperity and wellbeing.

I recently did some research about Alexander the Great but I had no idea he said this, as you quoted:
“I would rather live a short life of glory than a long one of obscurity”.
True to his words, he died before his 33rd birthday. Such a short life indeed.
