Babe Ruth (born George Herman Ruth, Jr. at Baltimore, Maryland) was born in 1895. Baseball has always been his passion since he was a kid. He was a member of St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, an all-boys reformatory.
Nicknamed “The Bambino” and “The Sultan of Swat,” he began his MLB career as a star left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. But he rose to prominence as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. From 1914 to 1935, he played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). Ruth set the records for home runs, runs batted in, bases on balls, slugging percentage, on-base plus slugging, and many other statistics that are still in use today.
In the “Baseball’s 100 Greatest Players” list by Sporting News, Babe Ruth was voted as number one. Ruth was rated the second-greatest American athlete of the century in a poll conducted by ESPN in 1999, only after Michael Jordan, the basketball legend. Ruth became one of the “first five” initial inductees of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
