Beyoncé Knowles Growing Up

Born in Houston, Texas on September 4th, 1981, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was destined to become a popstar from the beginning. Even throughout her childhood years growing up in the ‘everything’s bigger in Texas’ city of Houston, she was entering singing competitions and looking to the stars. Here’s three facts about Beyoncé’s family life that may surprise you.

1. She has More Siblings than Just Solange Knowles

After Queen Bey entered the world, Solange Piaget Knowles followed. And, they’ve been close ever since. Including with their musical careers.

So, it’s not just the Beyoncé albums you can enjoy; there’s plenty of Solange albums to listen to, too!

However, it isn’t just a wonderful world of Destiny’s Child. While Matthew and Tina’s relationship deteriorated, he found love in the arms of another. With actress Alexsandra Wright, he fathered his son Nixon Knowles. Then, Matthew went on to meet dancer TaQoya Branscomb, with whom he fathered his third daughter; Koi Knowles.

2. She is a Descendant of a Slave Owner

Heading back to the ancestry side of things, a piece of history came out of the woodwork to surprise everyone in the family. Looking at Beyoncé’s lineage on her mother’s side, we can see that her great, great, great grandfather was actually a wealthy slave owner.

His name was Joseph Lacey and he fell in love with one of his slaves; Rosalie Jean Louis.

3. Beyoncé Knowles Wasn’t Always A Confident Queen

Back in her days as a young singing princess, Beyoncé is remembered to have been quite a shy girl with very few friends.

In fact, Beyoncé’s mum, Tina, singed her up to dance classes when she was just 7 years old. She did this to help our Princess Bey make more friends. Then, when there, she thrived and her parents were stunned at Beyoncé’s performance!

Within no time, she was winning local competitions and contests which would build into her love for singing and performing later on.

The Early Career of Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé Albums

As most of us know, the Beyoncé height of fame didn’t grow over night. And neither did the grossing Beyoncé net worth. It all started with a singing group named Destiny’s Child. And, while this might not be a surprise, we do have some facts about the Destiny’s Child group that might cause a raise of the eyebrow.

4. Destiny’s Child is a Biblical Reference

You read that right. The girls called their band Destiny’s Child after a passage in the Book of Isaiah.

The Book of Isaiah forms the Old Testament with Hebrew and Christian values. And, with Beyoncé Knowles having a very religious upbringing, it made sense.

The extract from the Book of Isaiah is as follows: “But as for you who forsake the Lord, and forget my holy mountain, who spread a table for Fortune, and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny”.

However, when the name ‘Destiny’ was taken by a Swedish heavy metal band in 1980, Tina Knowles suggested the name ‘Destiny’s Child’.

5. Destiny’s Child Weren’t Always the Band You Thought They Were

After Beyoncé and her friends decided to join forces and sing together, they actually started their career as a band called Girls Tyme. Yes, it is as cringey as you thought it would be.

And, according to their manager (A.K.A. Beyoncé Knowles’ dad, Matthew), they went through so many other names before scoring their most memorable and iconic brand name; Destiny’s Child.

Some of the other examples of their band name are; Somethin’ Fresh, Cliché, The Dolls, Destiny and so on. Apparently, there were so many names and girls associated with the band over the years, Matthew started believing it was a revolving door!

6. Beyoncé is the Only Original Member

While Destiny’s Child might have gone their separate ways on June 12th, 2015, Beyoncé was the only member who was there from start to finish. While it might have helped to have her dad as the manager of the band, it wasn’t until March 1st, 2000, that it became the iconic trio we all love and remember today.

That said, it didn’t stop any previous members from taking up a lawsuit with Matthew Knowles for kicking them out of the group.

7. Bey Fired her Father as her Manager

After going solo and reaching the Beyoncé height of fame we know today, the Beyoncé net worth began to grow. And, this was in-part due to keeping her dad as a manager. However, after rumors of infidelity, theft and legal document issues, Beyoncé Knowles made the decision to fire her dad as her manager.

Despite saying their relationship has only parted on business terms, he is alleged to have stolen from Queen Bey, meaning their personal relationship as dad and daughter is bound to have suffered a pull on the cord.

Since then, Beyoncé Knowles has worked with several managers, all being an incorrect fit. So, she decided to move towards being managed by a team in her own company; Parkwood Entertainment.

Beyoncé’s role as a back-up singer in a ‘Dreamette’ trio struggling to make a name for themselves looks at the reality of black female singers in the mid-1960’s. The performance throughout this role actually landed her a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture”.

Beyoncé considers her role in Dreamgirls to be her first major acting role. Meaning she may regret her role in the Austin Powers comedy.

10. Not forgetting about Cadillac Records (2008)

In the same vein as Dreamgirls, Beyoncé took-on more of a leading lady role in the 2008 musical drama: Cadillac Records. Portraying the role of real-life blues and jazz singer Etta James (formally Jamesetta Hawkins), Beyoncé’s acting brought on an array of tension, drama, lust and love for the music.

Set in 1950s Chicago, the movie is based on true events and was rated a 7/10 by audiences.

However, this performance took Beyonce to the next level in her acting career as she was nominated for “Best Original Song” in the Golden Globes, “Best Actress” in the BET Awards, “Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media” in the Grammy Awards, “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture” in the Image Awards and “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” in the Satellite Awards.
